Jack Wills' Grand Opening Today on Newbury Street: Looks like a "Grand Country House Debauched by Partying"

Warm up those credit cards, Anglophiles, because one of our favorite (and quintessentially) British brands has just opened its doors in Boston! The first Jack Wills urban store in the United States—its first two Stateside shops are located in Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket—bows on Newbury Street today. Though it was only a simple raw space when we popped by earlier this month, Jack Wills has transformed its townhouse location on the tony shopping drag into a spectacular rah space—all prepped and poshed out in the brand's signature pinks and blues. The overall economy is bad and consumer spending is down, so why to so many large national chains seem to be focusing right now on expansion in New York City, a locale many of them shunned because of the perceived high cost of doing business? J.C. Penney just opened its first Manhattan store. Nordstrom is planning its advance into the city. Wal-Mart is kicking the tires, looking at some potential spaces. And many national chains that are already here are ramping up. Stephen Stephanou and Virginia Pittarelli two principals with Madison Retail Group, the brokerage firm looking for spaces for Nordstrom’s Rack concept in Manhattan, spoke with BNET about national retailers entering Manhattan and the challenges they face.

A Retail Dispatch from London

I just returned from London having been there during the second half of the Easter Holiday.  Consequently, families on vacation and tourists were in abundance in the major shopping venues in the capital.  Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street, and Oxford Street were literally teaming with people - many carrying shopping bags.  Apparently, while there is a settling of retail sales in other parts of the UK, sales in London remain strong for many retailers.  As one real estate professional mentioned to me, “this is the cheapest place to buy a Rolex, at least for Europeans,” who are benefiting from the softening of the pound against the euro.  This seems to be making London a bit like the shopping mecca that New York enjoyed until recently - where literally hordes of shoppers descended on the city seeking values. Retail Real Estate Report

Despite deteriorating economic conditions, the retail sector has to date continued to perform relatively well, according to brokers, developers and owners recently surveyed. CB Richard Ellis’ (CBRE) latest Global Retail Rents Survey, for example, finds that retailers are focusing on some of the major global fashion capitals, pushing rents in the world’s most expensive retail locations even higher.
